After over twenty days of closure due to cross-border tension between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the Torkham border is scheduled to reopen tomorrow, Saturday morning.
According to the Government Officials, it has been decided to open the Torkham border tomorrow (Saturday) from 9 AM only for Afghan families returning to Afghanistan. Further, Govt officials stated that during this time, commercial activities and the movement of pedestrians on both sides will remain suspended.
Also, the Officials of the concerned department say that verbal instructions have been issued regarding this decision; however, a formal notification has not yet been released. Despite that, the relevant staff have been directed to report for duty tomorrow so that the return process of Afghan families at the border can be managed in an organised manner.
Notably, locals, transporters, and the business community have all been negatively impacted by the extended closure of the Torkham border. Trade and the local economy are at a standstill as hundreds of freight trucks and containers are stuck on both sides of the border. As a result, transporters are having significant challenges.
Meanwhile, Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed to maintain a ceasefire until November 6. On November 6, both countries are scheduled to hold further talks in Istanbul, where discussions are expected on border conditions, the repatriation of refugees, trade matters, and other key issues.
In order to permanently open the border and resume economic activity in the area, locals believe that the government should take decisive action to normalise relations between the two nations. Recall that yesterday, locals and customs clearing agents in Landi Kotal protested for the reopening of the Torkham border. They have now declared that they will hold another protest on Saturday.
